The Soup Kitchen Project remains one
of BAFA's top priorities. This program which represents
BAFA's first outreach to Armenia, has raised $811,200
between 1993 and 2005. These contributions fully support
four soup kitchens and an auxiliary site. The moneys
are used for foodstuffs purchased at the highest quality,
yet at lowest cost possible. None of the funds are used for
organizational overhead.
BAFA's Soup Kitchens make a
significant difference in the quality of life of the most
needy in Armenia. The elderly and the orphans of war and
earthquake are the primary patrons of our soup kitchens.
They rely on the daily meal provided by BAFA for their basic
survival.
As of January 1996, FAR (Fund for
Armenian Relief) has been BAFA's partner in overseeing the
operation of the soup kitchens. While BAFA handles
fundraising, FAR manages the kitchens' daily operations.
FAR's soup kitchen crew in Armenia is comprised of local
individuals who are dedicated in providing quality and
stable, long-term service.
Today, according to Ministry of
Statistics of Armenia, 16 percent of population are
extremely poor; the amount of Social Security checks
received by the elderly buys only half a loaf of bread per
day. So you can see how our Soup Kitchens go a long way in
filling the critical need in the basic survival of the
elderly.
The road to independent statehood has
not been an easy one. Although during the past thirteen years
Armenia's economy has improved slightly, we have yet a long
way to go before we can be assured that the most vulnerable
can take care of themselves. Our important job in this area
is not yet complete. The limited resources of the Diaspora
go a long way in Armenia, so please continue to support
those who would not survive without our Soup Kitchens.
