HEALTH
Thanks to the support of friends and supporters, BAFA's
medical programs have achieved stellar results. Our successes
have been in various areas. To date, our Board of Directors has
solicited and secured the support of several companies whose
donations of medical supplies and equipment have exceeded 2.5
million dollars. This sum represents discounted price estimates,
which we could not otherwise afford. The funds donated by our
friends and supporters have covered the cost of transportation
of our packaged goods to the warehouse of the UAF. In turn, the
UAF has shipped them to Armenia free of charge.
BAFA funds raised for the health programs have made it
possible for 5 surgeons to be trained in the USA. Three were
trained in Trauma Surgery and two in orthopedic surgery. All
these were completed at the University of California in San
Francisco's departments of general surgery and orthopedic
surgery. The last trainee spent 15 months as a senior resident
at UCSF/SFGH taking calls and fully participating with his
American colleagues, thus getting a tremendous training that no
other surgeon in all of the ex-soviet countries ever had. He did
return to Yerevan and is now the chief arthroscopic and
reconstructive surgeon in a new hospital at the "Saint
Nerses the Great Medical Center" in Yerevan. His predecessor
trainee, also by us in San Francisco, had a similar position at "Erebuni"
hospital in Yerevan.
We are very proud of our physicians who are gaining the
reputation of being the best in their field. Our model training
program yields benefits well beyond the individual physician
whose knowledge is multiplied and positively impacts the
standard of medical health in Armenia in general.
Finally, physician members of our board have been in constant
contact, by phone fax and recently by e-mail, where our trainees
send their consultation along with scanned x-rays, to have
opinions for the management of complex and problematic patient
cases.
